There is a wrong notion, that rich and famous are the happiest people in the world. Depression is caused due to immense physical and mental stress. We often ignore the fact that they are also normal human beings. They seem to have all the riches of the world but, they also feel loneliness and emptiness in their life. Let’s see the life of these top celebrities who had depression. One of the leading ladies of Bollywood, Miss. Padukone suffered from depression and anxiety. She realized this when she was shooting for her film ‘Happy New Year’ in 2014. She had felt an emptiness in her stomach and shallowness while breathing. At first, she thought it was because of stress and tried to keep herself distracted by working more.

Deepika took a long break of two months and spent time with her family in Bangalore. She had gone for counselling sessions, but that did not work as expected. She took a second opinion, which prescribed medication for her to come out of depression.

As one of the top celebrities who had depression and fought it, Deepika also spoke about it boldly. She wanted to send a message that, mental health is as important as physical health. Bringing a change in the society’s idea about mental health was her motive.

2Parveen Babi

Parveen Babi

The most beautiful actress of the 70’s and early 80’s era, Parveen Babi also suffered from loneliness and was schizophrenic. She was known for being an actress who was matchless in beauty and talent.

Failed relationships and some childhood incidents were the cause of her mental illness. She ended her career in Bollywood and went to the United States to get cured of her depression and schizophrenia. However, she could not get well and died in 2005. Bollywood lost a wonderful actress to mental illness.

3Manisha Koirala

Manisha Koirala

Manisha Koirala one of the top actresses of the 90’s, battled clinical depression and cancer. She had an unsuccessful marriage with Samrat Dahal. All the fights and finally divorce was the cause of her depression. In 2012, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She got treated in New York and is cancer free since then. Koirala is also known for her social work.

Fighting depression and Cancer can be a tough job. While it could get Manisha more depressed and also kill her, hats off to her will power and fighting spirit. She could fight both depression and cancer and is fully active as a social worker.

One of the highest paid Hollywood actress is also, one of the top celebrities who had depression. She suffered from this mental illness when she lost her mother in 2007. The Oscar winning actress, fought depression by keeping herself busy with work. Jolie also fought breast cancer and underwent treatment for ovarian cancer.

She is now spreading awareness among other women about these diseases. Angelina is one of those fighters who never gave up and try to pass on the same spirit to other women.

One of the most influential singer, Lady Gaga also suffered from depression. She never stopped herself from showing it off with her crazy side. She often feels lonely and depressed. She has made a way to fight her depression, by channeling it with full energy towards an active direction.

She claimed to be sad for no reason, even though she has so much around her to be happy about. Channeling the negative feelings into crazy acts is the way she fights it and does not let it effect her. Positive spirit, I must say!

Depression is a mental health disorder. It can happen to anyone, be it a five year old child or an adult. Even animals are pron to depression. Taking care of your mental health is very important. The Indian society attaches a stigma to depression or any mental illness and does not open up for treatment soon. Because, if you visit a psychologist or a psychiatrist you will be labeled as a mad person.

Almost all the above mentioned celebrities who had depression, fought it and were open about it. They wanted to make a point that, going to a psychologist or a psychiatrist does not mean they are mad or mentally and intellectually challenged.
